    Monday, July 04, 2011

Anti-China protesters gather in Hanoi again

           Agence France-Presse in Hanoi  Jul 04, 2011

About 100 protesters marched in Vietnam yesterday despite a security clampdown and a vow by China and Vietnam to rein in public opinion over tensions in the South China Sea.

Protests - not common in authoritarian Vietnam - have occurred in the capital for five weekends in a row over the maritime dispute.

Plainclothes and uniformed security agents poured into the area around the Chinese Embassy and sealed off roads, but about 40 protesters penetrated the cordon. They marched towards central Hanoi, followed by riot police.

More people joined the rally along the way, shouting that two South China Sea archipelagos - the Spratlys and Paracels - belong to Vietnam.

Both countries have longstanding sovereignty disputes over the potentially oil-rich island groups, which also straddle commercial shipping lanes vital for global trade.

Tensions flared in late May after Hanoi said Chinese marine surveillance vessels severed an oil survey ship's exploration cables in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone - an area extending 200 nautical miles into the sea. In a second incident, Hanoi said a Chinese fishing boat rammed the cables of another ship within the zone. Vietnam then held a live-fire naval drill off its central coast.

"China must respect Vietnam's exclusive economic zone," said a sign carried by demonstrators.

Analysts have said that Vietnamese authorities permitted the rallies, which have drawn up to 300 people, because they served the government's purpose of expressing displeasure with Beijing.
