China sees more young deputies

“It is unexpected that a farmer’s son like me could become a deputy to the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC),” said Wang Nianfa, a 32-year-old earthquake rescuer. Indeed, the incoming congress is seeing more new deputies born in the 1980s, xinhuanet.com reported. Statistics show 114 deputies to the 18th National Congress of the CPC are younger than 35. They account for 5% of all the 2,200-odd deputies, who are aged 52 on average. The proportion of this younger age group is 1.9 percentages higher than during the 17th National Congress of the CPC.

A review of polling data going back to 1936 shows the race between President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney is the closest in 76 years, local media reported. As of Monday, President Obama has a very slim 0.4% lead in the popular vote based on consensus data from Real Clear Politics. During the 2000 presidential contest when George W Bush faced off against Al Gore, the consensus poll shows that Bush had a 0.56% lead over Gore. It ended up with Bush’s winning by a razor’s edge.

Microsoft is working toward retiring its Windows Live Messenger service in the coming months and integrating its MSN users into Skype, The Verge, a US Tech blog, reported citing several sources. Microsoft will announce a statement later Tuesday about the readjustment plan for MSN and Skype, said a spokesperson for MS Corporation’s China branch. Microsoft picked up VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol) provider Skype in an $8.5b deal in May, 2011.

Taxi operators and bus companies can now buy the company’s all-electric E6 taxi or K9 bus on credit with a zero down payment. The facility is being offered through China Development Bank and China Everbright Bank. High prices have been a major hindrance in the sales of electric vehicles.

A high school student from Yangzhou, Jiangsu who accidentally scratched a BMW left a note apologizing for his blunder, after waiting in vain for 30 minutes for the car owner to come, Oriental Morning Post reported. Xu Lihan wrote on the note, “I’m a student from the affiliated middle school of Yangzhou University. I carelessly damaged your car on my way home this noon. I’m sorry that I can’t compensate you right now,” and left his phone number. The car owner, who later discovered the note, was deeply touched and didn’t demand compensation. The story soon circulated on the Internet and won praise from netizens.

Nail-biting has been classified as a type of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) by the American Psychiatric Association in their upcoming edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, news.com.au reported. People with OCD are known to exhibit repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing anxiety. Other habits like hair-pulling and skin-picking will also be included in the OCD classification. A word of advice for the nail biters then—choose nail cutters over your teeth to stay in the sane category!

Standard & Poor’s misled investors by awarding its highest rating to a complex derivative product, created by ABN Amro’s wholesale banking division, which then collapsed in value less than 2 years later, an Australian court has ruled, the Financial Times reported. The ruling marks the first time a ratings agency has faced a full trial over a structured financial product.
