Triple whammy of bad news upsets investors’ Apple cart

Apple investors were rattled yesterday as worries about falling earnings were compounded by poor results from a supplier and fresh criticism in China.

The iPhone maker is expected on Tuesday to report its first year-on-year decline in quarterly earnings for almost a decade, according to Wall Street’s estimates, with many analysts forecasting a drop for the financial year too.

The prospect of a sudden halt in growth, after earnings leapt 23 per cent in the year to September 2012, weighed heavily on Apple’s shares. They fell to a 12-month low, down nearly 6 per cent in morning trading in New York, and briefly dipped below $400 for the first time since 2011.

Apple watchers had predicted a launch of an updated iPad in March or April but no such event has been announced. Despite reports from the Asian supply chain that Apple is gearing up for a June launch of a new iPhone, some analysts believe its flagship device may not be updated until September, leaving a fallow sales period for much of the first half of 2013.

“The broader concern that is putting downward pressure on Apple shares is that there are growing expectations for a weaker than expected June quarter,” said Colin Gillis, analyst at BGC Partners.

Apple also faces new criticism in China, despite a grovelling apology over its after-sales service last month. It was among nearly 200 providers of online content ordered by Chinese authorities to remove obscene materials that it hosted.
