塞尔维亚昨天宣布，前波黑塞族军事指挥官姆拉迪奇（Ratko Mladic）已经被捕。姆拉迪奇被控策划二战以来欧洲最严重的大屠杀，已被通缉16年之久。

塞尔维亚总统塔迪奇证实，69岁的姆拉迪奇已被塞尔维亚部队逮捕，并称捉获姆拉迪奇将提高塞尔维亚在国际社会的道德诚信。

塔迪奇在贝尔格莱德表示，引渡程序已经展开，意指将把姆拉迪奇从塞尔维亚引渡到海牙联合国前南斯拉夫问题国际刑事法庭受审。

姆拉迪奇是海牙法庭头号通缉犯，被控在1992至1995年波黑战争期间，犯下种族灭绝和反人类罪，制造斯雷布雷尼察大屠杀，以及策划对萨拉热窝的血腥围困。

塔迪奇没有透露姆拉迪奇是如何及在何处被捕，仅证实他是在塞尔维亚被抓获。

Extradition process for Ratko Mladic to face genocide charges begins after 16-year manhunt

Serbia announced the arrest of former Bosnian Serb military chief Ratko Mladic (pictured) yesterday, ending a 16-year manhunt for the general accused of masterminding Europe's worst massacre since the second world war.

President Boris Tadic confirmed reports that the 69-year-old had been detained by Serbian forces, saying the capture would bolster Serbia's "moral credibility in the world".

"The extradition process is underway," the president said in Belgrade, referring to the procedure for transferring Mladic to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, a UN tribunal based in The Hague.

Mladic, the most wanted fugitive by the tribunal, faces charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes for his role in the Srebrenica massacre and the bloody siege of Sarajevo during the 1992-95 conflict.

Tadic would not say how and where Mladic was arrested other than to confirm he was captured on Serbian soil.

But Serbian security sources said that three special units swooped on a house in Lazarevo around 80 kilometres southwest of Belgrade and close to the Romanian border early yesterday. The house was owned by a relative of Mladic and had been under surveillance for the past two weeks, one of the sources added.
