Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has sold about 5 billion U.S. dollars in shares, just days after he polled Twitter users about selling 10% of his stake.

According to regulatory filings, the billionaire sold 4.5 million shares this week, which equate to three percent of his total holdings in Tesla.

Musk's trust sold nearly 3.6 million shares in Tesla, worth around 4 billion U.S. dollars in a bid to settle tax obligations.

Another batch of 934-thousand shares worth 1.1 billion dollars was sold on Monday after exercising options to acquire nearly 2.2 million shares.

The sale was initiated under a pre-arranged trading plan set up in September. But it's not yet clear whether it related to Musk's Twitter poll.
