Pandas overeat Zoo’s budget

Lun Lun and Yang Yang, China’s giant pandas living in Atlanta Zoo in the US, are draining the zoo’s coffers by living a “luxury lifestyle”, China Youth Daily reported. In 2004, the cost of the 2 pandas’ upkeep exceeded $500,000, 5 times more than that of the next most expensive animal, an elephant. Every weekday, a crew of 6 travels within a 160 km radius, selecting food for the pandas from over 1,500 farms.

KLM buys cooking oil

KLM – Royal Dutch Airlines – will purchase 2,000 tons of recycled cooking oil from China and convert it into aviation fuel, xinhuanet.com reported. The airlines’ annual demand for the oil could reportedly reach 120,000 tons. After customs clearances, the 2000-ton waste oil, which originates in Shanghai, will be processed into biological jet-kerosene by technicians with the Dutch Airline and is scheduled to embark on its “air journey” around mid July.

This year, the dossier submission of applicants for certain majors in some colleges and universities is based on gender and the enrollment mark for females is higher than that for males, Beijing News reported Wednesday. Lv Pin, a researcher who has long demanded gender equality, suggests this is a form of gender discrimination which does not provide equal access to education. The enrollment mark for females and males varies by as much as 40-plus points in military institutes or colleges that recruit national defense students, Lv said. Other majors, such as languages, also offer a lower admission score for males. Some universities set a specific gender ratio for early-decision programs and when it comes to admission, men and women are enrolled separately.

New ‘land king’ in Beijing

A newly recorded highest price for residential land was achieved Tuesday after Beijing Hehuahengrui Real Estate Co won its RMB2.63b bid for a plot of land in Wanliu, Haidian district, China Securities Journal reported. The floor area price of the land plot is around RMB41,500 per sq m, according to industry insiders. This new high-priced land could be just an isolated case with little influence on the rest of the market.

Obscene scenes hit station

Youyang publicity authorities in Chongqing confirmed the county had closed down its radio and television station after it aired a 3-minute video clip of obscene scenes, chinanews.com reported. The video reportedly appeared when the station was airing a TV drama series. Police have begun investigating the issue.

Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism has released its Digital Report 2012, which reveals new insights about digital news consumption across Europe and the US, foreign media reported. The rapid switch from print to digital in the US is not being replicated exactly in European countries. Germany is showing the strongest allegiance to traditional viewing and reading habits and has the lowest levels of internet news use, the report said. In the UK, news about politics is perceived to be less important – and celebrity news more important – compared to the other countries surveyed. There is more interest in business and especially economic news in the UK and the US.

This was always likely to be an awkward occasion, said the article, thanks to some previous faux pas (失礼、过失) by David Cameron: supporting the re-election of Nicolas Sarkozy, refusing to meet Hollande on a trip to London in February, and declaring that he’d “roll out the red carpet” to any French high-earners fleeing Hollande’s tax increases. Also, the 2 disagree vehemently about austerity: Cameron is rigidly in favor, Hollande rigidly against.

$44M CEO works a day

Bill Johnson, former CEO of the combined company Duke Energy which recently merged with Progress Energy, was asked to resign by the board after just one day of work and compensated with $44m, Reuters reported. The money makes him the most expensive CEO of all time. The company worried about Bill’s “autocratic” management style and lacked confidence that he could lead the largest US entity, according to the new CEO Jim Rogers.
