Chinese president replies to letter from overseas students at Peking University

Chinese President Xi Jinping has encouraged overseas students at Peking University to gain a deeper understanding of China as it really is.

He made the remarks in his reply letter to 45 representatives of overseas students from 32 countries who are studying at Peking University. 

The president called on the students to share their thoughts and experiences with more people and play an active role in promoting friendship between the people of all countries.


China opposes UN High Commissioner for Human Rights' remarks on Hong Kong, Xinjiang

China has refuted the remarks made by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on Hong Kong and Xinjiang related issues. 

The Chinese Mission to the UN stressed that issues concerning Hong Kong and Xinjiang are China's internal affairs which brook no interference by any external forces. 

China's Foreign Ministry also rejected the comments about Xinjiang.

Spokesperson Zhao Lijian says attempts to interfere in China's internal affairs by spreading lies will not succeed.


Chinese FM to chair high-level meeting of BRI Asia-Pacific region

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will chair a high-level meeting on international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in the Asia-Pacific region via video link on Wednesday.

The meeting will focus on strengthening anti-pandemic cooperation and advancing economic recovery. 

Foreign ministers and economy ministers of relevant countries in the region and representatives from the United Nations and other international organizations will attend the meeting.


U.S. envoy, South Korean president discuss Pyongyang issues in surprise meeting

The U.S. envoy for North Korea has met with the South Korean President in Seoul.

Sung Kim and Moon Jae-in discussed issues concerning Pyongyang.


WHO in touch with Tokyo 2020 organizers on safety

Japan is looking to accelerate its vaccination campaign one month ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games. 

The World Health Organization says it's maintaining contact with organizers to guarantee safety.


Starlink expects it can provide global coverage around September

Starlink is expected to be able to provide continuous global internet coverage by around September.

The satellite internet unit of Elon Musk's SpaceX has successfully deployed 1,800 satellites. 

Starlink currently offers beta services in 11 countries and regions. 

It plans to eventually put 12,000 satellites into operation at a cost of roughly 10 billion U.S. dollars.


Yunnan elephant herd heads north again

The herd of wild elephants has traveled north and re-entered Yimen in Yunnan Province. 

The 14 elephants briefly halted their northward migration and moved south to Eshan last week.

They have been going back and forth within both counties in recent days. 

The male elephant that strayed from the main herd is now some 25 kilometers away. 

Experts are working on plans to guide the elephants' migration, and precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of both the animals and residents.
