Exercise in East China Sea

China Friday held in the East China Sea an exercise coded “Coordination in East China Sea-2012″, which involves 11 vessels from the Donghai Fleet of the PLA Navy, the fishery administration and marine surveillance agency along with 8 aircraft, chinanews.com reported. It has been the largest joint drill by the PLA navy coordinated with administrative patrol vessels this year and also the largest exercise in terms of the number of forces in recent years.
据中新网报道，19日，中国举行代号为”东海协作-2012″的联合演习。此次演练由解放军海军东海舰队、渔政和海监部门11艘舰船、8架飞机组成，是今年军地双方举行的一次大规模联合演练，兵力出动规模堪称近年之最。
The exercise is aimed at sharpening the Navy’s response to backup administrative vessels when practicing patrol voyages. For the purpose of the exercise it was assumed that, when carrying out missions in China’s waters, patrol vessels of the fishery administration and marine surveillance agency have been harassed and even collided into by foreign vessels.
此次演练模拟中国渔政、海监船只在中国某海域进行维权执法时，遭他国海上船舰阻扰并发生碰撞。其中海军支援地方维权是一个重点。
Railway taps membership
铁路小范围试水会员制
The official train ticket sales website 12306.cn has started a membership system, initially on a small scale trial basis, Beijing News reported. A RMB100-priced ticket can earn 800 points at most. A customer service worker at the website confirmed that 4,220 passengers, who participated in the award-winning survey on the service quality of the railway, have gained membership and accumulated points. A general card or a silver card will be issued according to the passenger’s points and 3 to 5 times as many as points will be awarded, based on his membership level as he buys more tickets.

Virtual stores to be opened

China’s biggest online retailer Yihaodian is to open 1,000 virtual supermarkets which contain no actual physical products but allow shoppers to see pictures of items available to buy using their smartphones, SinaTech reported. Though the Unlimited Yihaodian stores will just contain blank spaces, shoppers will be able to choose items on the spot using their smartphones. Each supermarket will be around 1,200 sq ms and will (virtually) stock 1,000 items.

Newsweek quits print

Newsweek announced Thursday it would end its 80-year run as a print magazine, taking the venerable publication all-digital in another sign of the woes of an industry struggling in the Internet age. The magazine will live as an adjunct to the online magazine the Daily Beast, with which it merged last year. Tina Brown, editor-in-chief of The Newsweek Daily Beast Company, said: “We are transitioning Newsweek, not saying goodbye to it.” The final print edition will hit newsstands on Dec 31.

Forget being over the hill at 40 – you’re now officially “old” at just 28, a new survey has found, The Daily Telegraph of London reported Friday. Dating site “SeekingArrangement” polled 1,000 male and female members to find out exactly when youth ends. A total 37% of women and 39% of men nominated 28 as the key age when you are no longer young. The 2nd most popular answer was 30 – chosen by 27% of women and 24% of men.

Chinese unmanned automobiles will embark on a test drive from Beijing to the neighboring city of Tianjin next year, according to the National Natural Science Foundation, Xinhua reported Thursday.

Kim Jong-il’s grandson on TV

Kim Han-sol, the grandson of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, granted a TV English-language interview that was posted on YouTube. The 17-year-old was studying at the UN-sponsored world college in Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina. He appeared articulate and impeccably dressed in the interview. Kim Han-sol, son of Kim Jong-nam – the eldest of Kim Jong-il’s sons, said he had never seen his grandfather or uncle. He visited North Korea in the summers, spending time with his mother’s relatives, whom he described as “ordinary” citizens.

Election cookies of US President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney have been launched at a Bakery named Oakmont in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, AFP reported. The images of the candidates are printed on icing paper with food coloring. Currently, Romney is ahead in the tally over Obama, 350 cookies purchased to 331. The bakery began their own presidential race 3 weeks ago and plans to maintain the cookie poll until Election Day.

It turns out earning RMB9,000 a month isn’t enough to make Shanghai and Beijing residents feel “rich”. A survey, entitled “how much money would it take for you to feel secure living in your city?” finds that first-tier city residents tend to define RMB9,000 as an elegant monthly income that “won’t make them panic”. The safety pin in 2nd-tier cities, such as Chengdu and Dalian, is about RMB5,000. The survey, cited by china.com.cn, is circulating on the Web.

Incandescents phased out
白炽灯本月起逐步退市
China will ban the import and selling of incandescent light bulbs (100 watts or more) starting October in order to gradually stop the use of such bulbs, said the National Development and Reform Commission Wednesday, xinhuanet.com reported. 48b kilowatt hours of electricity will be saved, or 48m tons of CO2 emissions reduced every year, if we change 1.4b incandescent light bulbs now used in China into energy saving lamps.

In the coming decade, thanks largely to California’s robust tech industry, the Golden State could attract $1b to $60b worth of Chinese investments, according to a new report by the Asia Society. Since 2000, California accounted for nearly 1/3 of the deals the US drew from China, and most of the funds were poured into software and the IT industry.

Blind Man tasered by police

A blind man in England was hit in the back with a 50,000-volt Taser and thrown to the ground by a police officer who mistook his white stick for a samurai sword, UK media reported. Colin Farmer, 61, was walking with the aid of a white stick to meet friends when he heard a man shouting “stop!” He didn’t know it was the police and went on walking, and then felt a thump in his back and fell to the ground. Taser guns should only deployed in a situation where officers feel they would be faced with a gun, according to local law.
