Both presidential candidates spoke of China in the debate up to 20 times, when they assaulted each other over the issues of the economy and trade. It seemed that the candidates were anxious to shift responsibility of a stagnant US economy to China and thus take the heat off their policies.

He continued the flipflopping accusation in answering questions related to healthcare, taxes and immigration.

Abe visits Yasukuni Shrine

Re-elected leader of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party Shinzo Abe visited the Yasukuni Shrine today as the country’s annual autumn festival kicks off, Mainichi Shinbun reported. Abe said during the party leadership election in September that he regretted never visiting the shrine as prime minister himself and criticized Yoshihiko Noda for not visiting the shrine. Abe stressed that if returning to power as prime minister, he would call on his cabinet members to visit the shrine.

An American entrepreneur has developed a phone app where “adulterers” can make their lovers’ text messages and calls disappear just with a shake of their phones. The Cate app, or “Call and Text Eraser”, has been made by 25-year-old Neal Desai, the Daily Mail of London reported. The app creates an invisible log of calls and text messages and can hide specific numbers from the contacts list. And at the touch of a button, all private information can be wiped from the phone forever.

Japanese cabinet officials have unanimously passed a decision for each of them to chip in and buy a washing machine for Nobel winner Shinya Yamanaka during a cabinet meeting, Jiji Press reported Wednesday. The offer comes after it was learned that Yamanaka, a professor at Kyoto University, was repairing his washing machine when he got the phone call on Oct 8 to tell him that he had won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. A contribution of 5,000 – 10,000 yen each from the 19 cabinet members would be enough to buy a new washer, it reported.

China announced Saturday that exports had grown 9.9% from last year in September, almost twice as fast as most forecasts. Yet domestic demand inside China is still flat.

Singapore’s parliament passed a personal data protection bill Monday, stipulating heavy fines for personal data offenses, xinhuanet.com reported. The Personal Data Protection Commission can impose fines of 10,000 Singapore dollars (RMB51,400) for every unsolicited marketing call or message. The bill is set to become law in January next year.

The latest James Bond film Skyfall has been praised by critics, with some hailing it “the best Bond ever”. Starring Daniel Craig in his 3rd outing as 007, the 23rd film in the franchise has been directed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes.

The iPhone has no shortage of weird accessories.
