CPI rises 1.9% in Sept
9月CPI同比上涨1.9%
China’s consumer price index (CPI) grew 1.9% year-on-year in September, easing from 2% registered in August, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Monday. According to the NBS, prices grew by 2.0% in cities and 1.7% in rural areas. Food prices went up by 2.5% and non-food prices increased by 1.7%. On a month-on-month basis, September’s CPI grew 0.3% from the previous month. On average from January to September, overall consumer prices were up by 2.8% over the same period last year.

EMBA rising in China

China has become the hottest place to study for an executive MBA, the Financial Times reported. With 5 top programs in the 2012 FT executive MBA ranking taught in China, the country dominates this degree sector. One reason for this dominance is that today’s corporate leaders in China were educated before business education became fashionable, says Qian Yingyi, Dean of the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University. The fact that most Chinese value an educational background is the reason for the popularity of getting an executive MBA.

Students expect less than 4k
应届生预期月薪不超4千
About 53.4% graduates said their salary expectation for their first job is less than RMB4,000 a month, according to a report on 2013 graduates’ job objectives, Beijing Daily reported Monday. In addition, first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are no longer the favorite working places for graduates. Among 150,000 respondents, 30% said they would prefer to work in their home towns.

More than half of the graduates consider social relationships to be more important than qualifications as in the past. And 64.7% of them believe a good job can be secured by strengthening an applicant’s competitiveness through actively expanding their social relationships.

Taliban to attack media

Enraged by widespread media coverage of Malala Yousafzai, who was shot and critically injured by militants, the Pakistani Taliban are planning to target media organizations, particularly television channels and some journalists in the country, insiders told News International Sunday. According to sources, the Taliban felt that the media has become biased against them and was giving “undue” coverage to the attack on Malala and portraying them as the “worst people on earth”.

People’s Bank of China recently drafted and issued regulations on prepaid business cards of payment institutions, People’s Daily reported Monday. The regulations require any individual or organization who purchases registered prepaid cards or more than RMB10,000 worth of anonymous prepaid cards to register their real name and provide a valid identity document. The regulations will take effect on Nov 1.

Former Cambodian King dies
柬前国王西哈努克逝世
Cambodian retired King Norodom Sihanouk died of natural cause at the age of 90 in Beijing early Monday, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Nhik Bun Chhay confirmed Monday, Xinhua reported. King Norodom Sihamoni flied to Beijing Monday morning to bring back Norodom Sihanouk’s body to Cambodia for a traditional funeral, Nhik Bun Chhay said.

Born on Oct 31, 1922 in Phnom Penh, Norodom Sihanouk was crowned King of Cambodia by the Crown Council in April, 1941. He led Cambodia to independence from France in 1953, effectively ending 90 years under French rule. In 1955, Sihanouk abdicated in favor of his father, Norodom Suramarit. But he re-ascended the throne in 1993 and then abdicated due to ill health in favor of his son, the current King Norodom Sihamoni in October, 2004.

He now conducts much of his business under another company.

Giant eyeball found on coast
海岸惊现神秘’眼球’
A huge, softball-sized eyeball from a mysterious sea creature washed ashore and was found by a man along Pompano Beach, Florida, AP reported. The eyeball may have come from a deep-sea squid or large swordfish, said Heather Bracken-Grissom, assistant professor in the marine science program at Florida International University. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute will analyze the giant eyeball’s DNA to attempt to identify what animal it came from.(See photo)
