Your Excellency, Premier Li Keqiang

Your Excellencies, Heads of State and Heads of Government,

Esteemed Ministers, Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 13th Annual Meeting of the New Champions!

Over the coming days, we will be exploring the theme “Leadership 4.0: Succeeding in a New Era of Globalization”.

At a time of heightened geostrategic tension, this Annual Meeting of New Champions will identify models for cooperation and highlight how businesses can shape the future of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to deliver sustainable, inclusive growth.

We are clearly living in a deeply challenging time, where we need the wisdom and experience of different stakeholders to come together for the common good. As United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in Davos earlier this year: “We no longer live in a bipolar or unipolar world, but we are not yet in a multipolar world. We are in a kind of chaotic situation of transition.”

The burning question – from the perspective of the World Economic Forum – is how to foster international collaboration in an age where geostrategic competition, rather than cooperation, is the norm.

We need a new type of globalization - Globalization 4.0 - which must respect diversity and accept that different nations have different approaches to development and different concepts for the way in which their economies should be managed and how their societies should be governed. But these differences should not stop us from looking for common solutions for common challenges. The world needs more globalization, not less, since in the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we will be even more globally interlinked. As President Xi stated in Davos, we will be a “community of shared destiny”.

The World Economic Forum is again strengthening its role in serving the world to work together even more in these polarizing times. We do so in collaborating with the major multilateral organizations, particularly the United Nations with whom we just signed a strategic partnership framework agreement.

One of the areas of this partnership is focused on digital transformation, and here I want to highlight the need for policymakers and businesses to work together to strike the right balance between fully deploying new technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and navigating the negative reactions that can result.

Gathered here in Dalian are the New Champions – all those who are building the world of tomorrow with new ideas, new initiatives, but always with the motto of the World Economic Forum in mind – Improving the State of the World.

While this is a global meeting, it is taking place in China, and it is wonderful to see such strong representation from key institutions and businesses from China and the ASEAN region, especially from our Young Global Leaders community.

Over the last 40 years, China has played a pivotal role in contributing to the increase in global wealth through its opening up and reform policies. When I first visited China 40 years ago, its global GDP share was less than 2%. Today, China accounts for close to 20%.  China has a wealth of experience to share with other nations and we encourage the efforts such as the Belt and Road Initiative which can play a key role fostering prosperity through the promotion of infrastructure and connectivity - both key drivers for economic development and social progress.

We also recognise China’s leadership and continued commitment to the Paris Climate Accord and its hosting of the Biodiversity Summit in Kunming next year, both of which are essential to advancing solutions to the climate crisis.

I would like to thank His Excellency, Premier Li Keqiang, and the Chinese government for their leadership in making the “Summer Davos” such a success over the last 13 years. When industries are particularly challenged by disruptive forces, it is essential to have such an industry summit to leverage the power of science, technology and innovation in a society-centered way.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends, it is my great honour to invite His Excellency Li Keqiang, Premier of the Peoples’ Republic of China to the podium to share his perspectives and remarks.
